The Pediatric Cancer Unit at Jimma University Specialized Hospital (JUSH) – treated more than 100 children with cancer

The Pediatric Cancer Unit at Jimma University Specialized Hospital (JUSH), developed through a partnership between Jimma University and the USA based Aslan Project– celebrated the first anniversary of its opening. Since the establishment, the Unit, under the leadership of the Aslan Clinical Director, Dr. Miguel Bonilla, and the two pediatric hematology/oncology fellows, Dr. Diriba Fufa Hordofa and Dr. Doreen Karimi Mutua, treated more than 100 children with cancer.

The partnership between JU and Aslan project dates back to February 2015 when the two institutions signed a Memorandum of Understanding to establish the Ethiopian Pediatric Hematology/ Oncology Program at Jimma University Specialized Hospital. The partnership exerted various efforts in providing hands on training for nurses, pathologists and pharmacists to build their capacity in the treatment of children and adolescents with cancer. The Pediatric Cancer Unit was inaugurated following a grand workshop on “Children with Cancer in Ethiopia: Improving Access, Survival and Quality of Care.” Held on May 16, 2016 at Jimma University.

During the celebration, the Aslan project and Jimma University expressed their appreciation to the partnership, to the Ethiopian Ministry of Health in building a comprehensive pediatric cancer program at JUSH; to the commitment and to the efforts of the medical faculty and many other dedicated supporters to make this extraordinary achievement possible.
