The Ethiopia writers’ association in commemoration of its 50th anniversary had organized an international conference from May2-7/2011 in the capital Addis Ababa. The theme of the conference was “From the independence of the continent to the liberation of the mind: the unfinished journey.”
Fifteen of the conference participants had a chance to visit our Univeristy and our city form May 5-7, 2011.
The colorful welcome to the guests took place in jimma main campus and at the palace of king Abba Jifar II.
On Thursday May 6, 2011 the guests attended Ju students’ annual festival. A variety of activities were performed at the occasion in honor of the African writers. In order to entertain the visiting Africa writers, cultural show, music, poems and circus show were performed in honor of them. Dr Fikre Lemessa president of Jimma University along with the senate members, Jimma city administration council and students of the Univeristy had made a warm welcome to them at Merewa 10 kilometers away from Jimma city.
The guests also had an opportunity to express their feeling about their visit to Jimma city and Jimma University. Most of them said they were extremely happy and fascinated with the Kings welcome the have received ten kilometers away from the city and at the main campus of the Univeristy.
On the next day they have visited King Abba Jifar II and saw the two dramatic performances they have seen the immortal shepherd acted by English language and literature students of Jimma Univeristy and the augury of abba Jifar II at the palace. In the afternoon they have shared their experience to the language and literature students of Jimma University at College of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine and they have visited Jimma Museum and donated two hundred USD dollars to help maintain the legacies in the Museum.
