About the Departement

General Information
The Department of Natural Resources Management was established in 2004. Natural Resources (NRs) are at the core of human civilization. Natural resources management forms part and parcel of sustainable development and is a systems approach (integrated-holistic approach) to managing our natural resources. This Natural Resources Management attempt to address the biological, engineering, social, economical and policy related aspects of managing natural resources as an integrated system. The Natural Resources Management program thus prepares students not only to care for the land and water resources, but also to serve the people whose well-being depends on these resources. The program also provides an opportunity for students interested in managing society's impacts on the environment and how to manage it for long lasting benefit.

Objectives
  • To produce qualified professionals in the area of Natural Resources Management,
  • Disseminate technological innovations generated in the course of education and research in NRM by using appropriate dissemination media/channel,
  • To strengthen Natural Resource Management effort through demand driven research and establish partnership with Governmental and NGOs to promote sustainable Natural Resource Management to contribute towards improved livelihoods,
  • Advice and/or involve in national/regional/international NR development and management policies,
  • To offer a up-to-date and multi-disciplinary education that produce competent and qualified professionals in NRM,
  • Integrate teaching – research with extension activities so as to extend appropriate technologies generated through research.
Mission and vision
The program of Natural Resource Management (NRM) envisions to become a nurturing academic and research program for (i) producing knowledgeable and skilled professionals who upon graduation can effectively and creatively work on an integrated use and management of natural resources, (ii) generating and communicating problem oriented technologies and techniques in NRM, and (iii) ultimately evolve as a centre of excellence in NRM education and research in the country as well as the region.
Future plan
The department is working to take location advantages and excel centre of excellence in Natural Resources Management in the country. The department plan to launch PhD Programme Natural Resources Management in the near future.
So far, the department has graduated:
  • Eight batches in BSC degree in regular programme
  • Three batches in In-service programme
  • One batch in summer programme
  • One Batch in Bega (Winter) Programme
  • Three batches in MSc Programme
Currently, the department offer training in:
  • BSc in regular and summer programme in Natural Resources Management
  • MSc in regular programme in Natural Resources Management with either watershed management or forest and nature conservation streams
  • MSc in regular programme in Soil Science,
  • MSc in Natural Resources Management (Wildlife and Ecotourism Management) will be launched starting from September 2014 onwards
  • MSc in Weekend Programme in Natural Resources Management in forest and nature conservation str

Service offered 
The department has well equipped soil Laboratory. The department is working to establish well equipped GIS laboratory and filed demonstration site for teaching and research.

STRONGBOW has been developed to fully take into consideration the four priorities of the NICHE programme: these are (a) focus on gender; (b) response to market demand; (c) use of local expertise; and (d) organisational learning. The basic strategy of ‘exposure, networking and sharing’ embodies the concept of the Ethiopian beneficiaries being linked, in a reciprocal way, to institutions in Europe and within the region (South Africa), in order to build capacity through learning from proven, positive experience. This project strategy has been designed entirely around the principle of sustainability: staff training; gender balancing; continuous professional development; ownership in terms of management and organisation; establishing demand-driven research and linkages with stakeholders; investments in the key area of (eco) tourism, based on sound natural resource management; catering to labour market needs and the involvement of the private sector.
Objectives and related key activities:
1.    Formulate multi-disciplinary training and research plans.
2.    Enhance staff quality and quantity.
3.    Improve curricula and training approaches.
4.    Improve research skills through interdisciplinary demand-driven action research.
5.    Establish sustainable financing mechanisms.
6.    Strengthen networking between the various partners.
7.    Enhance the organizational and coordinating capacity of the Horn of Africa Regional Environment Centre (Ho-AREC).

2. Kranichschutz Deutschland - Crane Conservation Germany
MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING were made between Kranichschutz Deutschland - Crane Conservation Germany, hereinafter referred CCG and Jimma University College of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine-Department of Natural Resources Management, hereinafter referred to as JU and the Nature and Biodiversity Conservation Union, Birdlife Germany - Africa Working Group, hereinafter referred to as NABU.
Understanding that all three partners JU, NABU and CCG recognize
  • High biodiversity of wetlands in southwestern Ethiopia area including the presence of endangered and/or endemic species (especially Wattled Cranes, Black-Crowned Cranes and Eurasian Cranes).
  • The need of research on reproduction biology and movements of Wattled Cranes and Black-Crowned Cranes.
  • The need to involve all stakeholders in its conservation.
  • The need to focus on conservation of species, protecting sites, conserving habitats (especially of wetlands) and to empower and improve livelihoods of local people.
The partners have agreed as follows,
A.    PURPOSE:
  • The purpose of this MOU is to develop and expand a framework of cooperation between CCG, NABU and JU to develop mutually beneficial programs, projects and activities for wetland-areas of southwestern Ethiopia. This MOU will cover a period of five years (June, 2014 to May, 2017).
  • Initially, the three partners will work together to facilitate research on Cranes. The results will serve   as the basement for funding applications on national and international level.
B.    ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • CCG and NABU will invite staffs and students of the JU to Germany to share information on crane reproduction biology, nature conservation and crane marking methods, so far as funding is available.
  • CCG and NABU will present showcases on crane reproduction biology and nature conservation in Germany at Jimma University from 2015 to 2017 and including in the course of workshops on Crane conservation so far as funding is available.
  • CCG and NABU will also work independently to raise funds for research or conservation of wetlands of southwestern Ethiopia.
  • CCG and NABU will work with JU to develop project concepts and/proposals for funding applications based on the outcome of the Crane research project.
  • JU will prepare joint marking activities on cranes.
  • JU will work on the possibility to raise funds for Crane research and conservation in southwestern Ethiopia.
  •  JU shall ensure that CCG and NABU are acknowledged as partners and/or in all publications resulting from or related to the funded projects/activities. All partners will ensure that partners acknowledged in all publications resulting from or related to the funded projects/activities.

International Foundation for Science (IFS): Two staff from the department of Natural Resources Management are conducting research by receiving research grants from IFS
Research: List of thematic areas under the department of Natural Resources Management:
Environment, ecology and climate Change, mitigation and adaptation and Natural Resources Management for sustainable Development. The department also planned to add wetlands and Cranes in the above listed thematic areas.
