Jimma University Hosts Workshop on Establishing a Multi-Modal Data Science Hub

On March 29, 2024 Jimma University (JU) hosted a stakeholder meeting and workshop focused on establishing a multi-modal data science hub within the university. This initiative, as highlighted by Prof. Netsanet Workneh, Vice President for Research and Community Service, aims to create synergy among ongoing data-related projects across various disciplines.

The establishment of the Data Science Hub builds upon the already initiated Multi Modal Agricultural Data Science Hub, which focuses on climate resilient agriculture. The initial stage centers on this Agricultural Data Science Hub, led by Data and Web Engineer and Researcher Dessalew Yohannes. The project received support from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation through the Science for Africa Foundation.

The workshop brought together experts, data scientists, and stakeholder leaders to explore the transformative potential of data science within agricultural contexts. Presentations covered overview of the data science hub by project lead Dessalew Yohannes, the importance of digital technologies in Ethiopian agricultural research by Dr. Girma Mamo from the Ethiopian Institute of Agricultural Research and the value of high-resolution satellite imagery for improving agriculture by Tesfaye Fufa, representing the Ethiopian Space and Geospatial Institute.

The workshop concluded with closing remarks from Prof. Netsanet, who emphasized that the valuable input received will be used to establish a robust multidisciplinary Data Science Hub that serves the university and beyond. This initiative underscores Jimma University’s commitment to fostering innovation and driving societal impact through cutting-edge research and education.
