Jimma University organized a New Year celebration at the Alumni Garden located at the College of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine on December 29, 2017. The Celebration was attended by the University top management, Senate members, expat staff and their families from various countries including India, China, Cuba, Philippines, South Korea and Nigeria.
The celebration was started with a New Year message from Professor Taye Tolemariam, V/P for Academics. He said, JU is very proud and is, honored for the contributions the expats staff are making to the development of the University. Though away from their country and family, JU is also their home, and the celebration of New Year that takes place every year is one indication of the University’s effort to make JU a home for everyone. Finally, he wished the staff happy and prosperous New Year.
The celebration of the eve was decorated with quiz contests, cultural performances and cake cutting and fireworks. The quiz competition that focused on general questions pertinent to Jimma University, Jimma Town and Ethiopia was part of what made the event humorous.
Following the quiz, the celebration hosted a short video about incredible India and a musical performance from a team of Indian staff. The music and dance presented from the team has thrown
a mood of exhilaration to the event.
The New Year eve celebration was decorated with another interesting performance, and New Year wishes from Chinese staff members. This team made a brief participatory presentation about Chinese New Year celebration which amused the celebrants. Following the presentation, three Chinese staff members performed Chinese Martial Arts which was part of the remarkable events at the celebration.
A brief remark about Cuba and Cuban culture followed by the Music by an expat staff from the country has added a color to the event and brought the Performances by expat staff to the end.
At the end, Female staff members, and families of the expat staff cut the New Years’ cake in wish of a happy and prosperous New Year followed by fireworks.
