Experts Deliberated on Finance Sector Challenges and opportunities in the Eastern Africa Region

Jimma University, incollaboration with Addis Ababa University, the FDRE Public Finance Enterprises Agency and the I-capital Africa Institute, organized the 2nd East Africa Finance Summit from December 19 & 20, 2017 at the United Nations Conference Center, Addis Ababa.

The Conference was attended by more than 300 delegates that include financial experts from Ethiopia, Kenya, Ghana and South Africa, active actors of the finance sector, bankers, insurance professionals, micro finance leaders, practitioners, government officials and intellectuals. The Summit was held under the theme “Preparing for tomorrow: Building proactive finance sector in East Africa.”

Dr. Gemechu Waketolla, CEO of the I-Capital Africa Institute, while delivering a welcoming speech said that the main objective of the finance summit is to provide a common platform for key players and stakeholders of the region’s financial sector to come together and discuss issues that matter most in shaping the future of the financial sector in East Africa  The conference is also aimed at  discussing  the Ethiopian context in terms of competiveness of the local finance sector in terms of services and products, capacity and skilled labor. 

The Guest of Honor H.E. Dr.Mulatu Teshome, President of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, stated in his speech that; ‘It is in the best interest of our country and the  finance sectors if policies and regulations become participatory,transpaternt and evolve out of well debated process as far as it contributes to the economic development in the suondest and quickest manner and steer clear of the low-income traps. Likewise collaborative efforts are also necessary for our common future.” H.E. Dr. Sintayehu WoldeMikael, Minster, Public Financial Enterprises Agency, also underlined on the need to strengthen the finance sector for the betterment of Ethiopia’s economy. 

Professor Fikre Lemessa,President of JU, through his delegate Mrs. Cherer Aklilu Senior Director for External Relations and Communication Office, noted that JU is committed to such initiatives as it is part of its core educational philosophy, Community Based Education and the motto ’We are in the Communiy’, JU also aspires to play active roles in attaining its corporate social responsibilies by hosting and co-organizing nationaland international confernces, workshops and summits like this on grand issues that could supplement in accelerating socio economic development of the country and in this case even in the sub region.”

Experts delegated on various issues including on the importance of merger, capital market and stock exchange, digital banking in East Africa finance sector, Participatory policy and regulation, Cyber security issues and new product development and growth  trends in East Africa finance. 

An Exhibition was also organized during the two days of the conference- Banks, insurance and financial technologies suppliers took part in the exhibition.
