Every JU Professor has a debt to repay – and a reason to give back!

Professors at Jimma University met on 22nd November 2018 to discuss how to give back to their first schools and community.

In Africa, it takes a village to raise a child; hence, everyone has a debt to pay back the village. Professorship is the highest level of academics one could earn, but the journey begins from pre-school lessons one learns from family and the community around. As a child is a child of everyone, today’s professors were once children’s of their village. Hence, they have a reason to give back.

Responding to the recent National call for, and global practice of, contributing towards shaping the generation of tomorrow, Jimma University professors are charting ways to give something back to their first schools. In their discussion, the professors pronounced that supporting schools that excite and enrich young students is a way to repay back one’s debt. Hence, creating conducive learning environments where the next generation of leaders and dedicated citizens develop the skills and temperaments they will need to make positive change in their country, and beyond has been proposed as a priority intervention area.

The professors promised, among others, to conduct fund-raising campaigns, undertake educational resource mobilization, deliver inspirational speeches and trainings, share their life and educational experiences instilling hope in the youngsters, and establish alumni associations to sustainably support their respective schools. Jimma University management promised to stand with the professors in all ways possible in their efforts of leaving an indelible mark in the generation of tomorrow. This project of reconnecting with first schools as role models concludes by January 2019.

Meanwhile and upon their return, the University professors have planned to lead a coordinated intervention efforts to revolutionize education in Jimma Zone through working with teachers, administrators, students and community members. This would amount to translating professorship into action, and paying back to the community. A bright future is ahead!
