Jimma University Library System (JULS) was established as University Library in 1999. University library system (hereafter ULS is commissioned to promote the Instructional, Research, and Public Service goals of the entire university community through the expert provision of information.

In its attempt to achieve the mission and objectives of the University, the ULS set out deliberately to function the following:

  • Developing and managing collections.
  • Identifying and providing learning resources to teachers, researchers, and students.
  • Managing available resources efficiently, effectively and economically.
  • Establishing an environment conductive to study which caters for multiple learning styles.
  • Liaising with users to establish their needs and to cooperate with management and other university services to meet these needs.
  • Training users and staffs to develop their information exploitation skills for efficient and effective utilization of information resources.
  • Carrying out appropriate development work in library and information professionalism with the aim of improving library’s multiple purpose services.
  • Maintaining effective links with other systems at domestic as well as international level.
  • The ULS constitutes nine branch libraries listed below:

  • Main Library / Social Sciences Library -2004
  • Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine College Library-1952
  • Health Sciences Library-1985,
  • Natural Sciences Library-2003,
  • Technology Library-2004,
  • Graduate Studies Library-2004,
  • Law Library-2005,
  • Female Students Library-2012
  • Six Health Centers and Community School Libraries.

In order to meet our institutional mandate the ULS is participating in different collaborative activities and projects, as full member, such as JU-VLIR- IUC project, Book Aid International, Ethiopian Library Information and Archives Society (ELIAS).

ACCESS AND USE

The ULS has general information, service standards, procedures, manuals and selected policies on the use of facilities and collections.

COLLECTION

The ULS operates in a closed and open access systems. JULS houses around 200,000 monographs, physical journals, magazines and audiovisual collections. The ULS has also access to7200 online e-journal resources (full-text documents, reviews, abstracts, and databases), in addition to over 10 million digital off-line eGranary library, and CD-ROMs.

SERVICES

The ULS reference department is the primary gateway to information about all of the library's services. The ULS has permanent class for information literacy skill development in the main library building and audiovisual section. In parallel to its traditional services the ULS has the e-library, Internet and CD-ROM database services, with 500 broadband connected PCs services.

ELECTRONIC JOURNALS AND DATABASE

Electronic full-text journals, articles, abstracts, reviews and database resources, be it subscribed by the library or open (free) access are available online and off-line. These resources are aquired mainly through HINARI, NLM, EIFLENET, eGranary, and CD-ROM databases in collaboration with PERI, WHO, ecbp programs and other scientific communities. LIBRARY CATALOGUE

The ULS uses both traditional and OPAC catalogues as its principal gateways to all its collections.

JULS is open for 24 hours a day from 8:00AM- 6:00AM (Monday-Saturday) and 16 hours on Sunday from 8:00AM-11:00PM, closed in public holidays.

ON GOING PROJECTS

JULS is currently running the following 3 major projects:

  • Library Automation by using  ABCD Software ( an open source software)
  • Digitization by using Dspace software (also free and open source)
  • Institutional Repository by using again Dspace software (open source software)
  • E-library services expansion, up to 500 PCs for a 24 hours service etc.
