Admission Requirement
The common regulations and requirements for Masters Degrees of Jimma University are:

  1. The applicant must have completed the academic requirements for the bachelor’s degree in relevant field of study (Nursing, Health officers, Medicine, Environmental health, Laboratory, Pharmacy, DVM) and graduates of Biology and Psychology (with prerequisite courses such as Human Anatomy, human Physiology) from recognized University, college or any institution of higher learning.
  2. Entrance Examination: The applicant must satisfactorily pass a qualifying examination, when required by the School/Department.

Non- Academic Requirements

  1. Age: Faculties or departments however, because of pedagogical reasons or special requirements of the field of study, may set appropriate age limits subject to the approval of the SGS.
  2. Work Experience: The applicant must have had, in principle, at least two year of work experience after obtaining the Bachelor’s Degree.
  3. Recommendation: The applicant must be supported through at least three letters of recommendation from the applicant’s undergraduate instructors, employers and professional associations. Such letters of recommendation should preferably come from the first two of the three categories.

Graduation Requirements
A candidate who fulfils the requirements laid down in these regulations, and whose research, study and examination results are judged to be of sufficient merit, shall be recommended by the Dean of the School of Graduate Studies, on behalf of the CGS to the University Senate, through the Office of the Registrar, for approval of the award of the appropriate credential.


  • The student must have cumulative GPA of 3.00 or above.
  • In professional courses and thesis work he/she must score a minimum of ‘B’ grade.
  • In common courses and practical attachments he/she must not score below ‘C’ grade.

Degree Nomenclature
 Students who fulfill the graduation requirements stated above will be awarded the Degree of ‘Master of Public Health in Reproductive Health’ after approval by College academic commission, the graduate council and University senate.

Programme Description

The program of training of Masters of Public Health in Reproductive Health takes two years and divided into five semesters, taking the summer sessions as one semester.  Within this two years program, students are expected to take 42 credit hours including independent research thesis in areas of reproductive health.

The programme encompasses common public health courses with a total of seven courses with 15 credit hours and seven specialty courses with 15 credit hours. There are two Elective courses with 2 credit hours each (Introduction to health economics and Introduction to Environmental health).
