The Department is responsible for teaching courses such as clinical psychiatry and mental health to undergraduate students in the fields of medicine, dentistry, anaesthesia and public health. In addition, course is offered to students of MSC program in Clinical Pharmacy. The courses are two to five weeks of duration. They are offered using didactic lectures, interactive sessions, role plays, seminars and clinical bedside teaching methods.

2.Long-term: Graduate
The Department took a national initiative to develop a graduate training program in mental health for non-physician clinicians (NPC). The aim of the program is to train mental health professionals who at the completion of their training will be competent to provide outpatient and inpatient care as well as community psychiatric services. 

The Master of Science in Integrated Clinical and Community Mental Health is a vibrant training program run by the Department of Psychiatry in collaboration with renowned institutions in Ethiopia, Europe and United States. The program was launched in January 2010. The duration of training is for two years. Students attend a full academic schedule with didactic lectures; problem based learning tutorials and interactive case sessions. Clinical Psychiatric training is undertaken at the Psychiatric facility of Jimma University Specialized Hospital. An attachment at a rural primary care center will form the underpinnings of community psychiatric training. To enroll, a BSc degree in public health, nursing or psychiatric nursing is required for the program.

Applications are made available through the Main Registrar office of Jimma University ( Applicants are required to send copies of their undergraduate degree and university transcripts from September to November in the year prior to submitting their application. Entrance examinations will be conducted by mid December. Results are posted by end of December for program to commence by mid January the following year.
