1.Regular Programs
Bachelor Degree in Pharmacy (B.Pharm)
General Objectives:
The general objective of the B.Pharm Program is to train highly qualified pharmacists who fulfill the essential, minimum common expectations of health care systems worldwide while fulfilling local needs.
Graduates would be expected to have the required knowledge, skill, attitude and behavior to support the health care system and to respond to patient needs work in hospital and community pharmacies; drug manufacturing, import and wholesale companies; public health services; academic institutions; pharmaceutical research; drug regulatory body and quality control organizations
Specific Objectives:

  • To train manpower that is more patient-oriented while still having a broad pharmaceutical knowledge that can easily adapt to working in any of the pharmaceutical services of the country.
  • To provide practice-based training so that future pharmacists acquire problem-solving skills.
  • To facilitate and assist in the transfer and adaptation of pharmaceutical knowledge

Admission Requirements
Admission requirements will be as per the University Senate Legislation
The University shall admit for undergraduate studies:

  • Students who have completed Ethiopian high school education and satisfy its entrance qualification assessments.
  • Applicants with foreign high school education of equivalent level to the Ethiopian high school education, as determined by the Ministry of Education , and who satisfy entrance requirements 

Special Admission

  • Special admissions into some programs may be granted to attract potentially resourceful candidates such as mature students.
  • A student who has successfully finished a set of particular modules which entitles him/her to a degree may also peruse other related modules and earn another degree continuously. Details guidelines shall be worked out by the concerned body.
  • Private applicants who fulfill admission requirements for regular students and produce evidence of financial support to cover tuition fees and other expenses may apply for admission into the regular program. The Registrar’s office shall set guidelines for such admissions which would be reviewed periodically and approved by the Senate.
  • The student who has completed a minimum of one academic year of study in good academic standing in an Ethiopian institution of higher education or in a foreign institution recognized by the Ministry of Education or has a diploma in the same or related field if applying for admission into a degree program from an institution of higher learning may also be admitted by the university.

Graduate Profile
A student who has successfully completed the Bachelor Pharmacy degree will be able to apply his/her knowledge, skills, and attitudes as follows:
It is envisaged that pharmacy graduates with the B.Pharm. Degree will be capable to assume the following responsibilities and attributes:
Core graduate competencies

  • Organize and control the manufacturing, compounding and packaging of pharmaceutical products;
  • Organize the selection, procurement, storage, and distribution of pharmaceutical materials and products;
  • Provide Pharmaceutical Care and Dispense and ensure the optimal use of medicines by the patient;
  • Provide pharmacist-initiated care to patients and ensure the optimal use of medicines;
  • Provide education and information on health care and medicines;
  • Promote community health and provide related information and advice; and
  • Conduct in research to ensure the optimal use of medicines.
  •  Demonstrate a high level of professional ethics in order to satisfy the pharmaceutical needs of the society.
  • Maintain and expand knowledge through self-directed learning.
  • Be able to work as a member of the health team.
  • Possess the necessary background to pursue further advanced study in the pharmaceutical sciences.

Skill

  •     Organize and control the manufacturing, compounding and packaging of pharmaceutical products;
  •     Organize the selection, procurement, storage, and distribution of pharmaceutical materials and products;
  •     Provide Pharmaceutical Care and Dispense and ensure the optimal use of medicines by the patient;
  •     Participate and/or conduct research &  development of new drugs discovery technologies
  •     Plan drugs and equipments logistic procurement, evaluation, setup & auditing and Monitor the inventory in storage,  work and laboratory area
  •     Provide professional services, leadership & quality assurance in work areas.
  •    Monitor and maintain proper functioning of necessary equipments/reagents
  •     Store and use laboratory supplies and dispose  expired drugs safely according to the rules and regulations
  •     Screen for the presence of drugs of abuse
  •    Supervise pharmacy technicians
  •     Develop and modify laboratory procedures
  •     Demonstrate leadership and management skills
  •     Engage in policy, professional standards, & continuing professional development issues pertaining to pharmacy profession.
  •     Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
  •     Collect, document, retrieve and interpret data related to all their activities  clearly and safely

Graduation Requirements
Graduation requirement will be according to each university rule and regulation. Thus, a student enrolled in the B.Pharm degree in pharmacy program is eligible for graduation if and only if he/she:

  •     Has taken all the required modules for the program    
  •     Obtained a minimum cGPA of 2.00
  •     Student should be able to pass written and oral comprehensive exam of the program, both in theory & practice before graduation
  •     The student should pass the compressive exam to sit for external examination administered by external examiners.
  •    Has not scored ' F ‘ grade in any course, and  should not scored ' C‘ grade in any course of core modules.
  •     Pass successfully and complete clerkship/professional practice program.
  •     Has carried out a student research project on a selected and agreed topic of research problem and scored a minimum of ' C' grade in his/her thesis report.

Degree nomenclature

  •     Up on successful completion of this program the graduate will be awarded “The Degree of Bachelor of Pharmacy (B.Pharm)” in English and “የባችለር  ዲግሪ በፋርማሲ “in Amharic.

2.Masters of Science in Clinical Pharmacy
Objectives of the program
The objective of the programs is establish patient centered pharmaceutical care service in the health care delivery system of Ethiopia .

Entry Requirements

  •     Hold B. Pharm + cGPA of 2.00 from a recognized College/ University.
  •     Registered pharmacist +two years of relevant work experience + acceptable professional conduct proven by references.
  •     Pass entrance examination

Graduate profile
    Upon completion of the training, the graduates will be able to:

  •     Deliver pharmaceutical care (Monitor, evaluate, design, recommend and implement patient specific pharmacotherapeutic plans).
  •     Involve in research and academia
  •     Play leadership role in health care delivery system

Graduation requirements

  •     At least B grade in each course and Cumulative Graduate Point Average ( cGPA) of at least 3:00
  •     Successful  defense of research thesis

3.Masters of Science in Pharmaceuticals Supply Chain Management
Objectives of the Program
General Objective:
The general objective of the graduate program is to develop competent professionals in the principles and practical applications of Pharmaceuticals supply chain management.

Specific Objectives:

  •     To produce professionals who can strategically coordinate activities of selection, forecasting, inventory, procuring, transportation, and warehousing of Pharmaceuticals within a particular company and across business within the supply chain.
  •     To strengthen the services of public, private and other institutions those are responsible for the supply of pharmaceutical in the country.
  •     To strengthen the Pharmaceuticals supply chain system by providing trained personnel in Pharmaceuticals policy and supply chain management
  •     To produce qualified individuals who can design, plan, and manage the Pharmaceutical supply chain operations.
  • To produce professionals who can effectively handle both domestic and foreign procurement of Pharmaceuticals.
  •     To produce professionals who can effectively design transportation system.
  •    To produce professionals who can manage store operations, design and implement inventory control systems and lead negotiation team.
  •     To meet the demand for Pharmaceuticals supply chain management instructors  and trainers in institutions of higher learning and the healthcare system
  •     To promote the proper recording and use of data for evidence-based decision making in the area of supply chain management
  •     To strengthen the research capacity of higher learning institutions and health and pharmaceutical research centers on Pharmaceuticals supply chain management.
  •     To assist the professionalization of the field of Pharmaceuticals supply chain management in Ethiopia, Africa, and elsewhere for the betterment of Pharmaceuticals supply chain management.

Entry  Requirements
Prior qualification
In addition to the general requirements of the School of Graduate Studies, Jimma University, prospective students must fulfil the following requirements to be considered for admission in this program:

  •     Must hold preferably Bachelor Degree in Pharmacy (B.Pharm.) or other health related disciplines (such as medical doctor, Nursing, Health Officer, Medical Laboratory Technology, Dental Doctors, etc.) from a recognized higher learning institution.
  •     Have a cGPA of at least 2.00 in undergraduate study.
  •     Professional registration to practice their respective profession in Ethiopia
  •     Adequate service in the public sector attested by official letter from FMHACA /Regional Health Bureaus or by other legal institutions.

  Bridging courses
For non-pharmacy first degree candidates going to join this MSc program, they must take the following bridging courses before taking the MSc courses.
i.    Introduction to pharmacy (2 ECTs)
ii.    Integrated physical pharmacy and pharmaceutics I (9 ECTs)
iii.    Integrated physical pharmacy and pharmaceutics II (9 ECTs)
iv.    Pharmacology (7 ECTs)
v.    Drug supply management (5 ECTs)
vi.    Pharmacy law and ethics (3 ECTs)
vii.    Introduction to pharmacoepidemiology (5 ECTs)
             Total =40 ECTS
Entrance examination
A candidate is required to take and pass written and oral examination (>50%).
Graduate Profile
Upon completion of the program, the graduates will be able to do the following activities:

Ü    Work as Pharmaceuticals transportation manager.
Ü    Manage port operations, transit shipping and multimodal operation.
Ü     Plan and organize logistics management functions
Ü    Lead/participate in Pharmaceuticals(health) program(project) planning and appraisal 
Ü    Design and lead operational researches and other program related surveys
Ü    Design, plan, and control Pharmaceuticals supply chain operations; plan & manage demand and supply in a Pharmaceuticals supply chain.
Ü    Forecast short-term and long-term requirements for Pharmaceuticals  
Ü    Identify potential suppliers; develop criteria for selection of suppliers; supervise, follow-up, and expedite procurement; design performance evaluation of suppliers; and develop long term supplier relationships.
Ü    Control and manage receiving and inspection activities; develop store classification and codification of systems.
Ü    Determine economic order quantities, maximum stock levels, safety stock levels, and keeps store ledger account; determine values of Pharmaceuticals issued and works for optimal utilization of pharmaceuticall resources.
Ü    Negotiate on projects/procurement contracts and manage procurement contracts
Ü    Take the initiative of establishing his/her own business.
Ü    Professionally manage Pharmaceuticals within both for profit and non -profit organizations.
Ü    Coordinate the activities of supply chain management
Ü    Provide consultancy services in regard to their area of qualification; procurement management, warehouse/stores management, production/ operation management, transportation management, Pharmaceutical resources management and related areas.
Ü    Understand and apply the ethical standards of procurement.
Ü    Understand and abide with the national and international policies, regulations and procedures involved in the procurement and distribution of Pharmaceuticals Identify business opportunities
Ü    Play leadership role in health care delivery systems
Ü    Teach Pharmaceuticals supply chain management related subjects to students of pharmacy and health in general.
Ü    Provide training on Pharmaceuticals supply management
Ü    Conduct evaluative research on Pharmaceuticals supply chain management.
Ü    Effectively manage the Pharmaceuticals supply chain system of a given health service organization/district/region in line with the laws and regulations governing the pharmaceutical sector of the country.
Ü    Demonstrate high level of ethical behavior.
Ü    Perform other tasks relevant to their area of qualification.

•    Successful defence of thesis

Degree Nomenclature
A candidate who successfully completed the coursework with a minimum of "B" grade, and has successfully defended the thesis in accordance with the rules and regulations set forth by the School of Graduate Studies, will be recommended to the University Senate for the award of a Master of Science (M.Sc) Degree in pharmaceuticals Supply Chain Management (የማስትሬት ዲግሪ በመድሃኒት፤ ህክምና መገልገያዎች፤ ህክምና መሳሪያዎች እና ላቦራቶሪ ኬሚካሎችና ሪኤጀንቶች የአቅርቦት ሰንሰለት አስተዳደር).

4.Masters of Science in Pharmaceutical Quality Assurance and Regulatory Affairs

Program Objectives
The goal of the programs is to establish a well regulated and quality assured system in the pharmaceutical sector of Ethiopia

 Entry requirements
    Hold B. Pharm + cGPA of 2.00 from a recognized College/ University.
    Registered pharmacist +two years of relevant work experience + acceptable professional conduct proven by references.
    Pass entrance examination
Graduate profile
Upon completion of the training, the graduates will be able to:
•    apply modern management, quality assurance and regulatory principles to drive improvement of systems,
•    launch and support products in regulated environments worldwide, and
•    Communicate effectively with stakeholders.
