The professionals graduated in this program can work in higher learning and research institutions as well as in private and government organization where accounting and reporting, and finance, tax and investment experts trained at higher qualification level is required.

Graduate Profile

This programme is designed to meet the needs of students who have some knowledge of accounting and finance and who wish to extend their knowledge to an advanced level. The programme consists of a core courses covering the main areas of accounting and finance, and research methods courses that supports the graduates research ability and relevance in the academic world as well as in industries working under ever changing global business and economy. The program also contains a practical attachment or internship to provide students with practical work environment and able to relate their theoretical knowledge with the real world and to link the department of accounting and finance of the Jimma University with industries.

The graduates are expected:

  • To teach  accounting, finance, auditing, taxation, investment course at undergraduate level in various universities
  • To conduct research that can address the current and emerging problems in accounting and reporting, financial institutions and markets, taxation and investment
  • To provide consultancy service to various governmental and non-governmental organizations in the area of finance, auditing, taxation, and investment
  • To work as accountant, financial manager, management accountant, tax officers and investment experts.
  1. 1.      General Content Area

The designed curriculum includes courses that enable students adequately meet the professional work force requirement of the country in accounting and finance at master’s level. The courses included in the curriculum are those enabling students to offer courses at undergraduate level, conduct research, engage in consultancy and assume various accounting and finance posts in various organizations. The courses include: Financial Accounting and Reporting, cost and management Accounting, Financial Management, Financial Institutions & Markets, Investment, International Finance, Taxation, Research in Accounting and Finance, Seminar in Accounting and Finance Econometrics, Advanced Auditing, Business Policy and Strategic Management, Development Team Training Program [DTTP], and MSc Thesis.

  1. 2.      Admission Requirements

Potential candidates who would like to join MSc in Accounting and Finance must fulfill the following criteria.

  1. 1.      First degree in Accounting, Accounting and Finance, Banking and Insurance, Banking and Finance, Business Education (Accounting, Banking and Insurance), Cooperative Accounting and Auditing, management and economics. Any candidates with the above listed fields can apply and admitted if and only if they full fill one of the following additional requirements:

i)        S/he has taken, in his/her first degree program, the following courses and score minimum of letter grade of ‘C’:

  1. a.      Principle of Accounting I & II
  2. b.      Financial Accounting I;
  3. c.       Cost and Management Accounting I;
  4. d.      Financial Management I and
  5. e.       Principles of Auditing I.

ii)      S/he agree to take the above stated four courses (namely, Financial Accounting I; Cost and Management Accounting I, Financial Management I and Principles of Auditing I) with undergraduate students as a prerequisite to MSc Courses, (especially to: Advanced Financial Accounting, Advanced Financial Management and Advanced Cost and Management Accounting),  and score minimum letter grade of ‘C’.

iii)    The candidate can take these bridging courses with regular or extension students, if any and cost of the study for private applicants should be covered by him/her at the rate similar to what the extension students are paying for each course at that time.

  1. 2.      Must pass the entrance examination to be administered by the Department of Accounting and Finance. The examination tests computational, communication and analytical skills and the subject matter.
  2. 3.      Meet all other university wide requirements.
  3. 4.      Other administration and technical issues shall be addressed by the department and/or PGs & Research coordinating office and the student services and registrar office of the college.
