BA Degree

Currently, the Department is offering courses in regular (BA and MSc) as well as a BA degree through distance and continuing education. Over the next 10 years, the Department intends to increase its MSc programs (specialisation areas) to six and will open two PhD programmes.

Objectives of the respective programmes
The objectives of the regular programmes (BA and MSc) are to produce high level manpower in the areas of economics to support the economic development and poverty reduction effort of the country. The main objective of the BA programme is to expose students to theoretical economics as well as policy options available to manage an economy at local, national and international levels. The MSc program is aimed at assisting students to identify their areas of specialty and conduct problem-solving high quality research. 

The objective of the continuing and distance education programme is to provide educational opportunities to citizens that have less access to education because of locational disadvantage and /or the nature of their job.

Delivery options
BA Degree: Regular Programme
The admission criteria for the Department are set by the College of Business and Economics which are consistent with criteria set by Jimma University and the Ministry of Education. Specifically, prospective students must have a social science background and they must have taken common courses in economics at preparatory level.

BA Degree: Evening Programme

BA Degree: Continuing and Distance Education Programme
Admission to continuing and distance education is decided based on the criteria set by Ministry of Education.
