Grand Challenge Ethiopia (GCE) Orientation workshop was conducted for Jimma University academic/research staff in the presence of V/president for Research and Community service and V/president for Institute of Health of Jimma University.
This half a day workshop was conducted at Jimma University on 14th March, 2017 by Grand Challenge Ethiopia (GCE) in Collaboration with Health Research and Postgraduate Directorate office of Jimma University Institute of Health (JUIH).
After brief introduction of the orientation workshop by Dr. Zeleke Mekonnen, Director of Health Research and Postgraduate of JUIH, the Grand Challenge Ethiopia (GCE) coordinator, Dr Geremew Tarekegne has delivered speech on the background and on GCE initiative, general concept on health innovation, highlighting on the GCE Call, discussion on the validation testing.
Briefly, he underlined that Ethiopia has joined a growing family Grand Challenges programs, by officially launching the establishment of Grand Challenges Ethiopia during the 17th Annual Review Meeting of HSDP.
Currently, GCE is based within Armauer Hansen Research Institute (AHRI) Addis Ababa to Stimulates the creation, appraisal, promotion and scale up of innovative ideas and concepts that are responsive to our health challenges that have direct link with goals and targets specified in the HSTP and the SDGs.
Among GCE mechanisms: providing seed grant to individuals or group of individuals to explore and test their innovative ideas in maternal, child and pastoralist community health, which latter can be implemented at scale through the next funding scheme (Transition to Scale), followed by providing validation grant to the universities & research centers to test innovations that surfaced elsewhere were discussed. The participants’ questions and concerns have been also well discussed. Overall, the major aims of this orientation workshop were:
- To provide Orientation on GCE initiative
- To share the concept examples of health innovations
- To discuss what type of funding available and for what kind innovative project available this year
- To discuss this year grand challenge Ethiopia call and the application process
- To motivate JU staff to be part of this national initiative
- To address the question and concern regarding GCE initiative
