Jimma University is Ethiopia’s first innovative Community Oriented institution of higher learning located 335 km south west of Addis Ababa. It is a center of academic excellence integrating training, research and service.
The Faculty of Technology is established in September 1997. It is comprised of four departments Civil, Electrical, Mechanical Engineering and computer science. It has been building up its capacity since its establishment by employing both expatriate and local staff.
The Department of Mechanical Engineering at JU currently has qualified and experienced staff that encloses a number of PhD teachers, Masters, Graduates and Diploma holders (academic staff members 26 in total). All faculty members participate in teaching basic courses apart from assisting in senior standing courses, students research projects (SRP), community based training programmes (CBTP), industrial attachments and consultancy work.
In this span of time the Department of Mechanical Engineering has experienced a significant growth in many respects and faculty staff is enrolled in several actions towards both a continual improvement of the Faculty performance and enhancement of the role of the Technology Faculty within Jimma University and all over Ethiopia.
The Mechanical Engineering Dept at JU is well equipped in terms of facilities, staff, co-curricular deeds, and industrial interface, which are leading and expand its activities in various directions.
The department offers BSc. Degree program in Mechanical Engineering tailored to address the needs of industries, technical Enterprises and advancement of all forms of knowledge keeping in pace with international standards of academic quality.
The students undergo the rigor of theoretical and practical trainings covering the fundamental core courses on thermal, Design, Manufacturing and Production areas with emphasis on state-of-the-art technologies, problem-solving skill and a great deal of hands on experience.
The major objectives of the training in undergraduate program are
- Design machine components and simple equipment
- Design manufacturing processes of simple products
- Comprehend technical knowledge to solve real life problems
- Acquaintance with computers for computer aided simulation, modeling, synthesis and design Analysis using latest application software
- Managing Production Operations, Maintenance, Quality, Steam Generation, Air-Conditioning, Pneumatic and Refrigeration systems
- Design and innovate intermediate and appropriate technologies that suits the country needs
- rocurement of machinery and vehicles including inspection, installation and erection as applicable.
- Research and Development in applied areas
- Policy and standards formulation
- Marketing of engineering goods, services etc.
- Cultivating the culture of multi-disciplinary, inter-sectorial and team training skills.
The graduates of the department can work as Design Engineers, Technical Managers, Production Engineers, Maintenance Engineers, Sales Engineers, Survey Engineers, and Plant Engineers in industries and technical services.
