Brief History
Jimma University is Ethiopia’s first innovative Community Oriented institution of higher learning located 335 km south west of Addis Ababa. It is a center of academic excellence integrating training, research and service to society. The Faculty of Technology is established in September 1997. It is comprised of four departments, Civil, Electrical, Mechanical Engineering and computer science. It has been building up its capacity since its establishment by employing both expatriate and local staff. Electrical Engineering department at JU is running by qualified and experienced staff that comprises a number of Masters, Graduates, and Diploma holders. The total numbers of academic staff members are 25 including those on study leave. Apart from teaching basic and senior standing courses, academic members of the department participated in students research project (SRP), community based training programs (CBTP), industrial attachments, and curriculum activities.

Ever since its establishment, the department of electrical engineering has produced competent engineers to help alleviate qualitative and quantitative shortage of skilled manpower in the country. The department has also played vital role in day-to-day improvement of the faculty and enhancement of the contribution of the technology faculty within Jimma University and all over Ethiopia. The department of electrical engineering has well developed laboratories such as electrical machines laboratory, power system laboratories, instrumentation and control systems, high voltage laboratory, communication system laboratories, and computer laboratories for use of under graduate students.
Objectives
To address the ever increasing demand for electric energy, faster and novel means of audio and video communication systems and the automation in industry, the department offers BSc. Degree program in Electrical Engineering. Besides giving a thorough grounding in basic sciences and Engineering subjects, the curriculum in Electrical Engineering lays emphasis on problem solving skill and deep understanding of electrical and electronic devices, electromagnetic field theory, computer hardware & software, electrical energy distribution system, communication & control system, signal and image processing. Students are also facilitated to have hands on experience in industry. The major objectives of the training in undergraduate program are:
  • Understanding the electronic devices and design of basic circuits.
  • Design of the subsystems to be used in control , communication and power areas.
  • Enhance the analytical and problem solving skills to solve real life problems.
  • Use of computers and simulation softwares for modelling, synthesis and design.
  • Acquire the proficiency in programming skills for diverse problem solving.
  • To enable the students to apply his theoretical knowledge in practical situations.
  • Provide consultancy on installation and maintenance of electrical equipments used in different areas.
  • Formulation of policies concerned to electrical engineering.
  • Cultivate the team work and management skills.
  • Evolve the interdisciplinary team culture for the solution of multidisciplinary problems.
  • Design and upgrade the appropriate technologies that suits the need of the country especially rural Ethiopia.
  • Research and development in applied areas suitable to the environment.
The department emphasizes on to offer the graduates with higher proficiency in design , maintenance, technical management and services along with academics.
