Objectives
The goals of the Department of Civil Engineering are rooted in the mission and goals of the Jimma University. To that end, the program of the Department is committed to the following :
  • To train civil engineers who can design and construct a wide range of civil engineering works such as buildings, bridges, roads, dams, water supply facilities hydropower, and irrigation structures, etc.
  • To undertake relevant research in line with the University programme, the research activity should benefit the community at large as the philosophy of the university is community based training programme.
  • To provide consultancy-services to governmental and non-governmental organizations through its existing Facilities.
  • To strive to achieve self-reliance both in teaching and research by strengthening existing programmes and opening new undergraduate programmes in relevant fields, and
  • To contribute to the advancement of science and technology through research.
Future plans
The Department has planned to expand the services of the Department by opening new undergraduate programmes. The opening of water resources engineering, Construction Management, and hydraulic engineering at the undergraduate level are among the future plans of the department .The Department's plan is very realistic and goes along with the objective of the University and demand of the nation.
Educational programs
The Department provides a variety of courses which can be studied either full time (four years regular day program ) or part-time (six years evening programs) leading to the award of Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Civil Engineering. The Department has laboratories of soils testing, materials testing, hydraulics & hydrology, sanitary and surveying and use will be made of these wherever appropriate during course offerings. In addition, computer facility is also available to the students of the Department in the computer center of the Faculty where use can be made for appropriate courses.
