The current college of Public Health and Medical Sciences (CPHMS) the then Jimma Institute of Health Sciences (JIHS) was established in 1983 with the aim of producing primary health care teams in response to the “Health for All by 2000” declaration in Almaty. Since then the college has produced thousands of health professionals in various disciplines. 

As one of the nation's premier college of public health and medical sciences, JUCPHMS is dedicated to advancing biomedical knowledge and humane healing through innovative educational methods. It has always been a leader in cutting edge educational initiatives, having pioneered a community-based education. The college takes pride in its commitment to educating the next generation of scientists, public health practitioners, pharmacists, clinicians and other health care professionals.
