History

The Faculty of Law commenced academic activity on the 19th December 2002 with its first in take of 158 students Advanced Diploma in law program. The academic staff consisted of 2 expatriates and one indigenous, Barrister Shipi M. Gowok (Nigerian) Coordinator and Head of faculty, Dr Padma S(Indian) Assoc. Prof, and Ato Biruk Haile respectively.

Goals and Objectives

  • To train legal manpower for the country to meet the ever increasing need of the society for persons skilled in law with the ultimate goal of strengthening the ruleof law in an emerging democracy .
  • To improve the practice of law in all its ramification in areas such as research and consultancy.
  • To network with International and Local partners such as Non- Governmental Organizations, Universities, Foundations, Research Institutions etc for the advancement of law.
  • To engage in community based activities

Objectives

  • To train and produce law graduates both at the advanced Diploma and LL.B levels , who will serve the country in various fields of endeavour as Judges,Prosecutors, Private legal practitioners, Administrators etc.
  • To Provide continuing legal education, extension services, law related training toward the improvement of skills of less trained persons who are already working or in the employ of National or Regional governments
  • To improve the knowledge and standard of less trained legal practitioners and civil servants who may wish to pursue career development in any chosen areas being offered by the law faculty.
