Introduction

From a wider perspective, Agricultural Education and Research are important vehicles of development in any country. It holds true to Ethiopia as well that modern Agricultural Education and Research are essential for our national development. The year 1952 is a landmark for the beginning of modern agricultural education and research in Ethiopia. It is during this year that the then Jimma Agricultural Technical School (JATS) was incepted. Therefore, the current Jimma University, College of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine (JUCAVM), formerly JATS, mothered agricultural education, research and extension activities while other institutes like Alemaya University (formerly known as Alemaya College of Agriculture), eventually Ethiopian Agricultural Research Organization (EARO) (Formerly known as Institute of Agricultural Research, IAR) and Ministry of Agriculture (MOA) took over the agricultural research and extension activities as their mandates.

Throughout the historical developments of the College, there had been many ups and downs that the college had to pass as hurdles to step on the current platform. It has changed its names, mandates and lost its experienced staff due to transfer to Alemaya University (then Alemaya College of Agriculture) and Ethiopian Agricultural Research Organization (then Institute of Agricultural Research) leading to subsequent disintegration of research and extension activities of the college. The research, which was footed at Jiren, had national and international reputation for its problem solving and demand driven research activities were running under 19 programs. The contributions of this pioneer research center are now living witnesses documented in the form of experiment station bulletins, scientific articles, special reports and miscellaneous publications. Some results have also been released as improved technologies such as varieties of crops, animal stocks, farm implements and cultural practices.

Currently the college has a longstanding vision to be a center of academic excellence and proven competence in agricultural training, research and extension by producing highly competent and skilled professionals in broad areas of agriculture, rural development and natural resources management and conducting multidisciplinary research which is innovative, result oriented and demand driven.
