The University is known for its Community Based Education (CBE) philosophy and pioneer higher learning institution in using Community Based Educational philosophy in the country. JU has been practicing the philosophy for almost three decades in its education system; accumulating wealth of experiences, passing through challenges and reaping opportunities. Now preparation is well under way to host a national workshop on the grand theme “Community Based Education (CBE): Three Decades of Experiences, Challenges and Opportunities in Jimma University” from 26th – 27th of December, 2014. The workshop is aimed to provide an excellent learning opportunity, as well as a venue for exchange of ideas among highly varied stakeholders and show directions on the way forward. It is also expected to serve as a venue for establishing a network of innovative schools in the country.
The intended audiences for the workshop are academicians, policy makers and different stakeholders who are interested in the link between education and development and in making education relevant to the societal needs for development. JU intends to share its experiences and the challenges it faced along the way in the past three decades. The Workshop will be a colorful event where papers will be presented in six major thematic areas that includes; genesis of CBE in JU, pedagogy and CBE at JU, Implementation of CBE at JU, Community perception towards CBE, Global Scenario of CBE and CBE and sustainability. Participants will also engage in field visits to observe some of the major achievements of CBE in the community, in Jimma town and the surrounding areas. The CBE exhibition which will be organized by the Office of External Relations and Communications is an event that will colorfully display the recorded three decades events of CBE from the past to the present.
