Zoonotic and animal diseases - Mastitis

Mastitis is one of the most complex and costly diseases of dairy cows occurring through out the world and generally involves interplay between management practices and infectious agents. In Ethiopia, mastitis is insufficiently investigated and information related to magnitude, distribution, and risk factors is scant. A crossectional study conducted on bovine clinical and sub clinical mastitis in Addis Ababa region indicated 15.9% quarters were positive on the California Mastitis Test (CMT) out of which 1.6% were clinically affected.

The overall prevalence of sub clinical mastitis at the cow level as determined by the CMT and bacteriological examinations was 34.3% and 30.2%, respectively and the overall prevalence of clinical mastitis was 5.5% at cow level. A study conducted in Bahir dar showed a prevalence of sub clinical mastitis based on CMT of 34.4% in cross breeds compared to17.9% in local breeds. Because of non-professional and wider usage of antibiotics there are several reports of drug resistance of mastitis pathogens to different antimicrobials.
