The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (FHUSS) at Jimma University is founded in February 2006 by pulling out the departments of Psychology, Sociology and Civics and Ethical Education from Education Faculty. The Faculty is now at its infancy stage with a vision of establishing more departments in the near future.
Our faculty aspires to be a model of centre of excellence in providing need-based student-centered education and training aimed at addressing societal problems while equipping the trainees with practical experience and problem solving skills. We want our faculty to be a research-led institution where knowledge is produced through staff and student research projects and inquires.
Our mission is to produce dedicated high caliber professionals at graduate and post graduate levels through the university’s educational approach of using community-based practical training and education.
FHUSS at JU has the following major objectives:
- To provide education and training that fills gaps in the human power needs of the country
- To provide research-led education and need-based training to solve societal problems & to advance the frontiers of knowledge
- To produce competent and creative professionals capable of not only consuming existing knowledge but also producing new knowledge through scientific inquiry and investigations with high sense of responsibilities
- To provide short-term and long term training & consultancy services for the community
- To encourage learning through independent study, cooperation & discussion in the form of inquiry as a means of seeking truth.
- To provide opportunities for teachers and students to engage in regular research projects that advances their capacities as scholars.
Currently the faculty has three departments. Two of them graduate students with a bachelor degree in Psychology and in Sociology. The Civics and Ethical education is a department offering supportive courses in civics & ethics across the different faculties in the university.
