The Faculty of Education, a young faculty in Jimma University, took its inception as a pre-medicine department in the year 1983 at the time when the Institute of Health Sciences was established. After ten years, in 1993, it developed to a program called ‘Basic and Applied Sciences program’. It was soon renamed as ‘Basic and Applied sciences Program’ with the intention of launching degree programs in applied sciences. Later, the name ‘Faculty of Sciences, Language and Liberal Arts’ was introduced, and the Faculty planned to train students in English language in addition to the applied sciences. Finally, the then Faculty Council reached a decision that it would be better to train students in teacher education of applied sciences, and, following this suggested the self-expressive name ‘Faculty of Teacher Education’. The administrative board of Jimma University, however, favored the name ’Faculty of Education’, the one being used now. |
